Concert At Villa Park, Birmingham, 1983
On Saturday July 23, 1983 Duran Duran staged an open air benefit concert at Aston Villa football ground, Birmingham, England, in front of 18,000 people.
The show began at 6:00 pm with host Radio 1 DJ Peter Powell introducing the first opening act, Prince Charles And The City Beat Band.
The second opening act was Robert Palmer who was then touring the United States and flew in especially for this charity concert. Palmer's band featured Frank Blair on bass, John Staehely on guitar, Jack Waldman and Alan Mansfield on keyboards and Michael Blair on drums. The singer notably performed two of his UK hits: Johnny And Mary and Some Guys Have All The Luck.
Duran Duran launched their set at 8:40 pm with their then-current hit Is There Something I Should Know? Near the end of the show, the band returned for two encores with John Taylor and Andy Taylor wearing Aston Villa football shirts.
Friendships from this concert and the after-show party held at the city's Rum Runner nightclub led Robert Palmer and band members John Taylor and Andy Taylor to form The Power Station in late 1984.
